Brass Taps in Petrie Terrace’s Heritage-Listed Cottages

The cottages and terraces that make Petrie Terrace historic mostly still have brass taps that close a rubber washer on a brass seat. High pressure and a century of use pit the seat, so a new washer alone soon drips again. We re-machine the seat on site, fit new jumper valves and O-rings, and keep original tapware in service where a heritage owner prefers it.

Mixers in Petrie Terrace’s Infill Developments

The modern infill homes on the suburb’s compact blocks use single-lever mixers throughout, and their ceramic cartridges wear or get scored by grit, so the tap drips from the spout or weeps around the lever. We carry cartridges for the brands fitted in these developments and can source the less usual ones.

Why does my shower still drip after a new washer?

Because the brass seat the washer closes against is pitted, which high water pressure makes worse. We re-machine the seat with a reseating tool, fit the correct washer, and check the breech behind the wall while the tap is apart, so a hidden leak into a shared wall is not missed.

Can a leaking tap damage a terrace or cottage in Petrie Terrace?

Yes. A drip from the spout wastes water, but a leak at the base of a tap, under a sink or behind a shower wall soaks into timber framing and floors, and in a terrace it can reach the shared wall. Those leaks should be checked promptly, before swelling, rot or mould set in.

Should I repair the old tapware or replace it?

If the tap body is sound, repair is quick and economical, and in a heritage-listed home it is often the preferred route. If the tap is corroded, parts are obsolete, or you want a water-efficient upgrade, new WELS-rated tapware is the better spend. We advise on site with upfront pricing either way.
