A dripping tap is easy to tune out, but it adds up quickly on the water bill. TRG Plumbing's fully licensed and insured plumbers repair leaking taps right across The Gap, the leafy, hilly suburb about 10 km north-west of Brisbane's CBD. Jumper-Valve Taps in The Gap's Post-War Homes

The brass taps in The Gap's post-war homes work by pressing a rubber washer onto a brass seat. After decades of use the washer hardens and the seat pits, so a new washer alone often will not stop the drip. We re-machine the seat with a reseating tool, fit new washers and O-rings and check the spindle, so the tap shuts off cleanly instead of dripping again within weeks.

Pressure Fluctuations and Tap Wear in The Gap

Water pressure varies across The Gap's hilly, elevated streets, and taps at the high-pressure end wear noticeably faster: washers compress, O-rings split and mixer cartridges hammer. If you are replacing washers more often than seems reasonable, we can test the pressure at the meter and fit a pressure-limiting valve so your tapware lasts.

Garden Taps on The Gap's Sloping Blocks

The established gardens on The Gap's large, sloped blocks mean hose taps get constant use, and a tap that drips or sprays at the wall can undermine paving or feed water toward the house. How much water does a dripping tap waste?

A tap dripping once a second can waste more than 10,000 litres a year. With The Gap's large family homes often having several bathrooms plus outdoor taps, two or three small drips add up to a real cost on the bill, and fixing them is one of the cheapest plumbing jobs there is.

Can I fix a dripping tap in my Gap home myself?

Swapping a washer is within reach of a confident DIYer, but worn seats, seized spindles and mixer cartridges are easy to get wrong, and in Queensland most tap work is licensed plumbing. A plumber will reseat the tap properly so it does not start dripping again.

Do you repair mixer taps?

Yes. The mixers in The Gap's modern family homes and architect-designed builds use a ceramic cartridge that wears or gets scored by grit. We replace cartridges from all major brands, can source them for less common models, and flush the line so the new cartridge is not damaged by the same debris.

Why does my shower still drip after I changed the washer?

The brass seat the washer presses against is almost certainly pitted, which is common in The Gap's post-war bathrooms. We re-machine the seat so the new washer can seal, and check the breech for leaks behind the wall while we are there.

Can a leaking tap damage my home?

A drip from the spout mostly wastes water, but a leak at the base of a tap, under a sink or behind a shower wall can cause swelling, rot and mould before you see anything. On The Gap's sloping blocks a leaking outdoor tap can also wash soil out from under paths and paving, so get those checked promptly.

Should I repair or replace my tapware?

If the tap body is sound, a repair is quick and economical. If it is corroded, the parts are obsolete, or you want a water-efficient upgrade to match a renovated kitchen or bathroom, replacing the tapware is usually the better long-term choice.
