Why Do Taps Start Leaking?

Traditional taps rely on a rubber washer pressed against a brass seat; over time the washer hardens and the seat pits, so the tap drips from the spout. Mixer taps use a ceramic cartridge that eventually wears or gets scored by grit in the water. Leaks from the handle or base are usually failed O-rings or body washers. Brisbane’s water and the age of many local homes mean these parts simply wear out, and the fix is a proper part replacement, not extra force on the handle.

Fixing Leaking Shower and Bath Taps

Shower taps leak in two ways: a drip from the shower head, which is a washer or cartridge issue, and a leak behind the wall at the breech, which can quietly damage the wall cavity and tiles. We repair both, reseating and re-washering the tap bodies and, where needed, replacing the breech or spout. If you’ve noticed damp tiles, mould or a musty smell in the bathroom, get it checked.

When to Replace Your Tapware

If the tap body is badly worn, the finish is corroded, or spare parts are no longer available, replacing the tapware is usually the better investment. How much water does a dripping tap waste?

A tap dripping once a second can waste more than 10,000 litres a year. Fixing it is one of the cheapest ways to cut your water bill.

Can I fix a leaking tap myself?

Changing a washer is possible for a confident DIYer, but worn tap seats, seized spindles and mixer cartridges are easy to get wrong, and in Queensland most tap work is licensed plumbing. A plumber will reseat the tap properly so it doesn’t drip again.

Do you repair mixer taps?

Yes. We replace ceramic cartridges in kitchen, basin and shower mixers from all major brands, and can source cartridges for less common models.

My tap leaks from the handle, not the spout. What’s wrong?

That’s usually a worn spindle O-ring or body washer rather than the main washer. We replace the seals and check the spindle for wear.

Why does my shower still drip after a new washer?

The brass seat the washer presses against is probably pitted. We re-machine the seat with a reseating tool so the new washer can seal properly.

Can a leaking tap damage my home?

A drip from the spout mostly wastes water, but leaks at the base of a tap, under a sink or behind a shower wall can cause swelling, rot and mould. Get those checked promptly.

Do you fix leaking outdoor and garden taps?

Yes. We repair and replace hose taps, including the vacuum breaker and the connection at the wall.

Should I repair or replace my taps?

If the tap body is in good condition, a repair is quick and economical. If it’s corroded, parts are obsolete, or you want a water-efficient upgrade, replacing the tapware is often the better choice. We’ll advise on the spot with upfront pricing.
